Bilbao Station is a key train station serving the Basque Country. The station is located in Bilbao’s Abando neighbourhood (the station is also known as Bilbao-Abando), which is fairly central. It hosts mainly commuter train services but does also have some long-distance routes. Mainline train services connect Bilbao to central Spain via Burgos or Logroño. It is also on Spain’s Feve, a narrow-gauge railway which connects many towns on the northern coast but can be very slow and aren’t very frequent. Indeed, once you’ve got to Bilbao, you may well be better off continuing your travels with a car hire!

Bilbao may not be the regional capital or have the pulling power of San Sebastian, but it is the biggest city in the Basque Country. And for many coming to the region, Bilbao is where people arrive first. The city is most notable for being home to the spectacular Guggenheim Museum, which Norman Foster designed. There’s no doubt the museum propelled the city to being a must-visit place. Beyond the museum, the lively city is a good place to enjoy a taste of the Basque Country. By taste, I mostly mean pintxos, a Basque specialty that is similar to tapas in that they are small, snack-like dishes. They’re a great way to sample Basque food and super reasonably priced too.
With a Bilbao Station car hire, you can get around the Basque Country more comfortably. Bilbao doesn’t have any beaches but you’ll find some lovely ones relatively nearby at Sopelana, Bakio and Laga. San Sebastian is about 100kms east of Bilbao.
The train station’s central location makes it a good place to collect a car hire if you’re already in the city. Bilbao Airport is a little over 10kms north of the city and is another good option for car hire.
