Northern Catalonia’s got lots to offer all year around. For instance, the medieval village of Besalu (pictured above) is just half an hour’s drive from Girona. Having your own set of wheels is the best way to get around and make the most of your time. And if you’re going to be in Girona, you can pick up a rental at Girona Station. Located centrally, it’s easy to get to and obviously very handy if you’ve arrived by train and want to continue onwards. In this post, you’ll find our guide to collecting a Girona Station car hire.
We also have a guide to returning a car hire to Girona Station.
Collecting a Girona Station car hire
Whether you’ve arrived into Girona by train/inter-city bus (the bus station is just in front of the train station) or already enjoying the charms of the city, collecting a car hire at the city’s main train station is worth considering. Located right in the heart of the city, it’s easy to get to with public transport (or even by walking) but it’s also within reach to motorways out of the city. However, there is an exception to this – and that’s if you want to collect or return a car hire on Sunday.
Sunday car hire collection
Sunday is not a great day to either be collecting a Girona Station car hire as both companies are closed on Sundays. However, with Europcar, you should be able to return a car hire to Girona Station on Sunday. Your best bet for collecting a car hire on Sunday is at Girona Airport. Sagales runs a bus service between Girona bus station (which is right in front of the train station) and Girona Airport. Tickets are less than €3 and the journey takes about 30 minutes. But make sure you check the bus timetables on Sagales’ website as there’s usually only one bus per hour.
On-site car rental
There are three companies with desks directly on-site at the train station: Avis, Europcar and Enterprise/National. However, if you’ve got an Alamo car hire, you can also head to the Europcar desk.
Girona Station map: Where to find the car hire desks and cars
The car hire desks are on the ground floor of the station along with other services such as the ticket office, cafes and shops. Train platforms are actually above ground on the first floor.
If you’ve arrived by train, use the escalators or lift to go to the ground floor. The three car hire desks are located next to each other by the Viajes El Corte Inglés. They are on the other side of the floor to the train ticket office towards the car park. Inside the station, the desks aren’t actually very well signposted but you will see signs towards the car park so follow those. If you’re in the main part of the train station where the ticket office is, follow signs to the car park, pass Viajes El Corte Inglés and turn left. Both car hire desks will be on your left.
If you’re already in the city and collecting a Girona Station car hire, you’ll find the rental desks towards the left hand side of the station. That’s if you’re facing the front of the station on Plaza (also spelt Plaça) España. You should see a big ‘Parking‘ sign pointing towards the car park over one of the entrances into the station. If you use that one, you’ll see the car hire desks on your right.
Finding your car
Once you’ve got your keys and all the paperwork is sorted, use the exit by Enterprise/National desk. Head towards your right and you’ll soon see the car park on your right. It’s located below the train lines.
