Huelva is one of the main gateways to the Costa de la Luz in southern Spain. This stretch of coast features lovely wide beaches of soft golden sand against a backdrop of sand dunes and pine forest. To the west of Huelva, you’ll find great beaches at Isla Cristina, Isla Canela, El Rompido and around Punta Umbria. And to the east of Huelva, there are great beaches at Mazagon and Rompeculos. Doñana National Park is also east of Huelva. A fantastic retreat for nature lovers, the park has been given both Biosphere Reserve status and UNESCO World Heritage Site status. There, you’ll find a labyrinth of land, water, marshes and pine forest that’s a haven for birds. The park also stretches to the coast where you’ll find sand dunes and fab beaches including Cuesta Maneli and Matalascañas.
Huelva itself is an industrial port city located between the Odiel and Tinto estuaries. It serves as a good jumping-off point for other destinations in the province. And if you’re arriving by train to the province, Huelva’s train station is a good place to pick up a car hire to get around.
100kms east of Huelva, Seville Airport is the nearest airport and offers a wider selection of car hire suppliers. Lots of car hire companies offer one-way rentals, which could be more convenient if you’re hoping to cover a lot more ground on your trip.
