Leon is a great city to explore more of the region from. Its pretty historic centre’s most notable attraction is the 13th century cathedral. Another top highlight is the San Marcos Monastery and the lovely square it’s located in. The city also has a great dining and drinking scene.
Other fantastic towns steeped in history in the province include Astorga, Ponferrada and Vilafranca del Bierzo. For nature lovers, there are a host of incredible landscapes to enjoy that are easily accessible from Leon too. Amongst them are the Picos de Europa National Park, which is about 100kms northeast of Leon. And about 140kms west of Leon, you’ll find Las Medulas. It’s a historic mining town known for its landscape of red mountainous peaks above verdant woodland.
The train station’s central location also makes it a good place to collect a car hire if you’re already in town. It also makes it a good location to drop off a car hire if you’re planning to be in Leon. About 8kms west of the city centre, Leon Airport is another good option for car hire. It’s also worth bearing in mind that many suppliers offer one-way rentals within Spain. This could be a more convenient option if you’re planning to cover more ground and not necessarily be tied back to coming back to your arrival point.
