Logroño is the gateway to Spain’s most famous wine region, La Rioja. It’s also a key stop on the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail that spans northern Spain. Much of the town, including the historic centre, is situated below the Ebro River that runs through Logroño. There you’ll find several important churches including the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Redonda, Santa Maria de Palacio and San Bartolome church. Like the Basque Country, pintxos are popular. Pintxos are similar to tapas in that they are small snack-like dishes. You’ll find them served on platters in many bars across the town.
Notable wine villages in La Rioja include San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Haro, Najerra, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Laguardia. As well as being famous for its wine, La Rioja is also notable for the castles that dot the landscape. About an hour’s drive west of Logroño, you’ll find several castles that you could do in a day. They include Cellorigo, Sajazarra, Anguciana, Cuzcurrita de Rio Tiron and Baños de Rioja.
Even if you’re not arriving by train to Logroño, the station’s central location makes it a good place to collect a car hire if you’re already in town. Bilbao Airport is the nearest airport and also has a good car hire selection if you’re looking for an alternative location. It’s also worth bearing in mind that many car hire companies offer one-way rentals, which could suit your plans better.
