The Asturias forms part of Spain’s Costa Verde, which means Green Coast in English. It’s an apt name for a stretch of coast characterised by verdant forests, green meadows, spectacular cliffs, lovely beaches and secluded coves. One of the most noteworthy beaches on the Costa Verde is the magnificent Cathedrals beach near Ribadeo. Gijon, Villaviciosa, Colunga, Cudillero and Llanes also have fab beaches. They’re also not very far from Oviedo.

Oviedo itself is the second biggest city in the Asturias and the capital of the region. A lively city, it has a beautiful old town. Some of the historic churches and monuments in and close to Oviedo have been given UNESCO World Heritage Site status. They include Santa Maria del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo to the north of the city and Santa Cristina de Lena, which is about 30kms south.

If you’re in or travelling to Oviedo and want to continue on towards the coast, the best way to get around is with an Oviedo Station car hire. Exploring and getting around the province is easy with your own car. Another good option for car hire is Asturias Airport, which is about 50kms northwest of the city. It’s the most convenient option if you’re flying into the Asturias. But it’s also worth noting that many car hire suppliers in Spain offer one-way rentals. As a result, this could suit your travel plans better if you’re hoping to cover more ground and not return to the same location.
