Ponferrada is located on the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail that spans northern Spain. The town’s most notable highlight is the Templar Castle. Situated on a hill, the castle rises above the river and features a drawbridge over a moat. Another highlight is the historic quarter, which you’ll find at the foot of the castle.

The province is in the west of the Castile and Leon region, close to Galicia. The area is home to some incredible natural landscapes, which are best explored with the convenience of your own car. One of the best natural attractions close to Ponferrada is Las Medulas. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Las Medulas is an open-air mine, which used to be famous for gold. There may not be a lot of gold left, but you’ll still find unique red peaks rising above canyons full of lush vegetation. The site is just 25kms west of Ponferrada. Another fantastic place to explore natural landscapes is at the Pico de Europas National Park, a few hours drive northeast of Ponferrada. Highlights from the park include the Cares gorge and Naranjo Bulnes mountain.

If you’re in or travelling to Ponferrada, a Ponferrada Station car hire is a great way to explore more of the surrounding area. 100kms east of the town, Leon Airport is another good option for car hire. It’s also worth bearing in mind that many car hire suppliers offer one-way rentals within Spain. As a result, this could fit your travel plans better if you’re hoping to cover more ground and not return to the same location.
