Santander is the main gateway to the Cantabrian coast. The city boasts several fab golden sandy beaches. The most notable of which is El Sardinero, which is about 1.3kms long and 80 metres wide. The area around El Sardinero also features beautiful Belle Epoque buildings such as the Grand Casino. There is also a beautiful promenade that’s perfect for a stroll away from the sand. With a good mix of beach and city life, Santander is a great place to explore more of Cantabria from.

There are a number of stunning nature reserves and national parks in the area such as Oyambre and Saja-Besaya. The former is 60kms west of Santander whilst the latter is around 70kms southwest of the city. The largest park in the region is the Picos de Europa National Park, which spans the Cantabria, Asturias and Castile and Leon provinces. Another highlight close to Santander is the Altamira caves. Prehistoric paintings were discovered in the Cave of Altamira and only a very limited number of tourists can venture in it. There is, however, a replica cave with faithful reproductions of the paintings.

If you’re in or travelling by train or ferry to Santander, a Santander Station car hire is the best way to get around and explore the surrounding area. 5kms south of the city, Santander Airport is another convenient option for car hire.
