Santiago de Compostela is one of the most visited destinations in Galicia. It’s most notable for being the last stop on the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. However, some choose to continue on to Finisterre on the coast. The city’s magnificent cathedral boasts both Gothic and Baroque features. The main attraction of the cathedral is the tomb of Santiago, which is the main reason for pilgrims coming to the city. Beyond the cathedral, the city has a beautiful old town and plenty of restaurants to enjoy the local cuisine. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, an almond cake called Tarta de Santiago is a must. It’s easy to recognise as the cake is often decorated with the cross of St James.

If you’re in or travelling to Santiago de Compostela by train (or on foot!), a Santiago de Compostela Station car hire is a great way to see more of Galicia. The Galician coastline boasts some fantastic beaches and fishing villages. Highlights include O Grove and Carnota. From Vigo, you can also catch a ferry to the Cies Islands. As well as several incredible beaches, the islands are a nature reserve for birds.

Santiago de Compostela Airport is the nearest airport and is another good option for car hire. Many car hire suppliers also offer one-way rentals within Spain.
