Vigo is a lively port city, which is most notable as the jumping off point for the stunning Cies Islands. The islands provide a retreat away from the city and boast several beautiful white sandy beaches. They are also good for bird watching and have several walking trails. Most visitors visit the islands on a day trip as there are limited facilities once you’re there. If you’re planning to go during the summer, make sure to book your ferry ticket in advance as visitors to the Cies Islands are limited. Back on the mainland, there are some lovely beaches south of Vigo including Samil and Vao.

If you’re in or travelling to Vigo by train, a Vigo Guixar Station car is the best way to get around and explore more of the Galician coast. About 60kms northwest of Vigo, O Grove is a fantastic fishing village with some lovely beaches. Other great spots to enjoy a spot of beach life on the Galician coast include A Lanzada and Carnota. Santiago de Compostela is also easily accessible from Vigo.

The nearest airport is Vigo Airport. Located 7kms east of the city, the airport is a good alternative for car hire.
